<p><span style="color: #333333; font-style: italic">The non-pursuer — a rare combination of journalist, historian and Methodist minister — did all three for their own sake and that of others, and did them very well. When he died, Time magazine titled his obituary “A Happy Man.&#8221;</span></p>
